Someone to Love (Pride, Oregon #10)(3)
Author: Jill Sanders

He really was excited to find out what gender both his sister Lilly’s and his cousin Riley’s babies would be. His entire family was excited to find out.

Especially his mother. Lacey Jordan was, according to many, the head of the Jordan clan, even though her brother Todd was the oldest. Everyone in the family knew it was actually Lacey that ran the family.

She was not only the mayor of Pride but the mayor of the family, a role his mother had taken to heart his entire life.

She might be the smallest of the family, but she was, at least in his mind, the strongest.

So when she’d informed him that he needed to start playing security for Sunset Weddings after Kara had been shot, he’d dropped everything he had going, including his position as a junior lawyer at a small law firm in Portland, where he’d worked since finishing law school in California.

He had worked so hard to finish the degree the past few years that when he’d finally graduated, he hadn’t known what to do with himself. So he’d taken the first job he’d been offered. The lower position at the firm allowed him enough personal time to play just as hard as he’d worked over the previous few years. He knew he had been overdoing it a little and supposed he was making up for all the lost time during his studies when he’d neglected to have a life.

Playing babysitter for the wedding sisters, as he had been referring to them since he’d first met them at Lilly’s wedding, had not been on his agenda. But when his mother had called and insisted, he’d cleared his schedule for the weekends and moved back home so he could babysit.

Then again, watching the pretty brunette rush around the massive barn for work hadn’t been that much of a chore. He’d never seen anyone work as hard as Robin Jenkins.

He knew that her parents had been longtime friends of his family and could remember seeing the sisters several times when they were younger. They had occasionally visited Pride during the holidays or during the summers, staying at this aunt’s bed and breakfast. There were several families that often visited, such as Ric, Rob, and Rose Derby, who visited Pride almost every summer and were like family.

When they were younger, the two sisters were hard to tell apart. Now, however, he could tell the difference between them even if he was blindfolded. It was strange, he’d never thought of them as pretty before. Well, pretty, but not worth a second thought. Not when he’d had a line of women after him, especially after he’d started taking law classes in college.

It had been as if he was wearing a badge on his forehead that said someday I’ll be a lawyer. The moment he started school, women had flocked to get his attention. Now that he’d graduated, that number had easily doubled.

Of course, when he’d been living on campus and attending all the right parties, he’d had his pick of college women. After school, he’d rented a small townhouse near the firm he worked at in Portland, and things had changed slightly. He’d ended up hitting a few bars each weekend with friends instead.

Now, however, having been stuck helping Robin out for the past few weeks, he was having a difficult time not noticing how extremely attractive she was in his sex-starved state. Watching Robin bustle around the old barn had him not only entertained but also extremely turned on.

The way he figured it, he could either try and convince Robin to have a little fun for the remainder of his time in town or he’d need to do something to get his mind off sex.

How long had it been since he’d been with someone? A few weeks before his mother had called and said that his uncle had asked him to come back into town for a job.

The fact that he’d been the first one Todd had thought of had honored him. Until he’d found out what the job was. Of course, his uncle being smart, he hadn’t mentioned what he’d be doing until he’d agreed and come back to Pride. Then it had taken a meeting from his mother to convince him further.

It wasn’t as if George didn’t have the time off from work. Actually, he’d been thinking of quitting the job and looking for something more challenging and closer to home.

At this point, he was just happy to be back home during the holidays.

It was a week after New Year’s, which meant that he had been in town for almost three months. He was growing restless and extremely horny. Hell, he hadn’t even had anyone to kiss at the New Year’s party.

Instead, he’d stood by and watched as every one of his cousins around him had enjoyed the party with someone. Even his sister was wrapped in her husband Corey’s arms.

After a moment, he’d realized that he was the last single Jordan standing. Every one of his cousins was either married or otherwise intertwined. Or, in the case of his cousin Jacob, entangled. After all, Jacob and Rose had been flirting around each other for as long as anyone could remember.

Currently, everyone in town believed that the couple were actually living together and, since the New Year’s party, it had become pretty obvious they were a couple.

Which left George in a class all by himself. Single.

In the past, he wouldn’t have cared, but since he’d turned twenty-five, he’d found himself thinking about his future more.

He only had a few months before he’d need to start looking for another job or go back to work in Portland. What his uncle was paying him covered most of his bills, but still, he couldn’t continue to babysit and expect to keep his career afloat.

It was funny, when he’d decided on a law career, he’d always dreamed of returning to Pride and opening up his own firm. He’d dreamed of going to the local courthouse and fighting to protect the innocent, but the closer he’d gotten to the goal, the more he’d realized that his career would most likely take him away from his home.

Facts were facts. Pride just wasn’t big enough to support a lawyer.

It was one of his greatest downfalls, the inability to jump at something he wanted and sacrifice everything to get it. It wasn’t as if he was a chicken, just… cautious.

Then he realized that being stuck in Pride the last few months hadn’t been such a burden. Especially with the nice distraction of being around Robin on a regular basis.

His eyes scanned the crowded party for Robin, and he smiled when he noticed her in the corner, helping refill a few guests’ drinks.

She’d worn her long dark wavy hair down for the party. Today’s outfit consisted of a cream-colored top with black dress pants and sensible heeled boots.

He always looked forward to the fancier parties when she wore a dress so he could get a look at those sexy legs of hers. They were the sexiest legs he’d ever had the pleasure of looking at. He wondered if they were as smooth as they looked, which got him wondering about the rest of her.

“You aren’t paying attention.” His sister stabbed him in the ribs with her finger.

“Ouch.” He winced, then wrapped his arm around Lilly’s shoulder. In the past few weeks,’ he’d noticed her baby bump growing bigger. “What?”

His sister smiled up at him. “We want you to video.” She motioned to his phone on the table. “When we release the balloons.”

“Why me?”

“You have the steadiest hands,” his mother joked.

“Besides, you’ve been hanging around for a few weeks now. You’ve got to know all the ins and outs of this place.”
