Noxious (Anathema #1)(7)
Author: Yolanda Olson

“Can the god complex for now, Aftyn. I think he’s really hurt,” Willa says to me as she gets on her knees behind him and begins to move his hair to get a better look.

Like a fucking mother gorilla picking gnats off her baby.

“How sweet,” I remark sarcastically.

Willa gives me a dangerous look over Dexter’s hair and I smirk.

“Why don’t you just say one of your fun little emo prayers over him. Think that might stop the bleeding?”

She scowls as she pulls her shirt over her head and presses it against the back of his head. “We have to stop at urgent care; I think he needs stitches.”

“Absolutely not,” I shoot back, shaking my head. “We’ve got somewhere we need to be, so if he bleeds out, I’ll be sure to pay for a power wash and some detailing.”

“Ignore him,” Willa instructs Dexter as she slides out of the truck, pulling him to his feet. He sways a few times before he’s steady and smiles down at her. “Thanks.”

“Get in the back and I’ll swing by one of those twenty-four hour places. If Aftyn doesn’t like it, he can walk the rest of the way.”

“I’ll be okay,” he says quickly once he sees the look of outrage on my face. “If it doesn’t stop bleeding, then I’ll let you know, but for now, I guess you guys have somewhere you need to be.”

I suck my teeth and decide to read my messages since I know that my mood is going to change anytime soon.

Think he’ll love you?

I grit my teeth.

Whoever the fuck is doing this is going to have hell to pay because after I look my father in his fucking eyes, I’m going after this son of a bitch game player.

“Aftyn? Are you okay? You look a little crazy right now,” Willa says cautiously.

“I’m fine,” I bark.

Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath, hold it for five seconds, the release it. Let me try that again. “I’m fine. Sorry about that. Are we ready?”

I do my best to wipe the sneer off my face, but I can tell by the look they exchange that I’m far from achieving it.

“We?” Dexter asks nervously, darting a glance at Willa.

I force a grin onto my face, “Fuck yeah. May as well come with us since we’ve gotten so far already.”

I don’t mean to sound as sarcastic as I do because I figure it’ll make more sense to just let him come with us. Besides, if he was willing to almost die hiding in the back, he’s probably a hell of a lot more fun than I’ve given him credit for.

Willa gives me a triumphant smile as she puts an arm around his shoulders, then turns and leads him toward the doors and I shake my head.

This was probably her fucking doing all along.

“So, can I ask you something?” I say to Dexter once she’s pulled out of the empty parking lot. He meets my eyes in the side-view mirror and nods. “What exactly is your deal? I don’t know you all that well, and we may as well start getting friendly since this is the hand we’ve been dealt.”

He looks nervous and I smirk.

I love doing that to people.

Usually a question or a well-placed look and people shake in their goddamn shoes in front of me.

“Well?”

“Um, I’m not sure what you mean.”

“He’s my friend. He wants to be your friend too. The end,” Willa intercedes as she pulls on to the highway.

I turn around in my seat, resting my chin on the side of my chair and look him right in the eyes. When he looks like he’s about to piss himself out of fear, I reach over and rest a hand on his leg.

“To be continued.”

Aftyn fell asleep about ten minutes after asserting that his dick is bigger than all of ours.

He likes to be in charge, and even though he’s far from it, I’ll let him have this one. The last thing I needed was him making this trip longer than it needed to be because he was having one of his fucking tantrums.

I adjust the rear-view and smile when I see that Dex is asleep too. Of course, chances are he’s more than likely unconscious, but that takes the work out of that for later.

I agreed to this stupid trip because not only do I want to be able to see if all of the Meyer men are insufferable assholes, but I know that if Aftyn’s dad does live with another man, it’ll give me an idea of how to handle these two.

I’d love for Dexter and Aftyn to hook up, but that seems like mission impossible for the time being.

I’ll get some tips from his friend, I tell myself as I turn on the radio and lower it just enough to not wake either of my boys up.

I begin to hum along to the song that’s on. It’s one of those pop classics from the 80s that I honestly can’t stand.

Anything to help myself stay awake at this point.

Aftyn shifts in his seat next to me and I half expect him to wake up, but he just crosses his arms over his chest and goes back to his soft snoring.

I turn my eyes back toward the road and shake my head, a smile on my face, and remember happier days, when he didn’t even think of his father, and his mother was finally out of his fucking life.

"Be quiet,” I tell him, giving the skin on his forearm a pinch. He hasn’t stopped laughing like a goddamn animal ever since we’ve snuck in through the back door.

His mother has been entertaining her latest guest in the living room and Aftyn thinks it’s hilarious to see her head bobbing up and down.

“What do you think they’re up to?” he asks with a snicker. I glance at him and arch an eyebrow. For as long as I’ve known him, he’s had a libido as high as the stars in the sky, so he knows exactly what they’re doing right now.

“If you don’t want us to get caught, we’ll have to wait until she’s done,” I warn him as I take him by the hand and we creep back toward her bedroom.

He rolls his eyes but lets me lead the way. Once we’re in her room, we crawl under her bed to wait for her guest to leave and for her to turn in for the night.

I never did like the way she treated Aftyn—she basically crucifies him every chance she gets for his father’s sins and has never given him a chance to be himself.

At least, that’s what he tells me, and since he’s not allowed to have friends, I’ve never been over much when she’s home. The one or two times that I have though, she’s laid into him like he’s the biggest pile of trash in the world and he just takes it.

Not anymore, I think grimly as he slides in beside me.

I turn my face toward him and when he glances at me, we both smile. Aftyn is my best friend in the whole world. Even though we honestly hate each other for the most part, we kind of know how to calm the other one down and it just works for us.

His full lips suddenly become a tight line of anger, and I reach over, take his free hand in mine, and give it a squeeze.

Seems that Mommy Dearest has gotten to the fucking portion of her ‘entertainment special’ and she sounds like a stuck pig squealing and moaning like a two-dollar whore.

“Hopefully it’ll be over soon,” I whisper to him as he turns his eyes toward the underbelly of the bed. His hand is shaking but I know it’s not in fear; it’s in anger, which he has every right to feel.
