Noxious (Anathema #1)(5)
Author: Yolanda Olson

As if to answer my question, the front door of his place opens and he tosses out a couple of bags, before he closes it again. If he thinks that I’m going to be his personal concierge, he’s got another thing coming. Being his goddamn chauffeur is going to be bad enough because I’m not entirely sure that I trust him to drive.

He’s not bad at it by any means, he just doesn’t know what speed limits are. Or any limits at all for that matter.

I’m ready to lay on the horn again when his door opens, he steps out and almost trips over his bags. I rest my chin on the steering wheel and when our eyes meet, he gives me the finger before he picks them up and walks toward the vehicle.

Pushing open the driver’s side door, I hop out and grin at him. “Sorry, but I’m not your maid.”

“Noted,” he replies with an eye roll as I pull open the door to the hatch and he tosses his bags in.

“What’s got you in such a good mood already?” I ask curiously once he slams the hatch and turns to walk away.

Aftyn glances at me for a moment, eyeing me carefully before he blows out his breath and shakes his head. “Nothing. Let’s get going before you change your mind.”

The familiar curve of his lips makes me smile and shake my head. I know it’s forced right now but he’ll tell me what’s wrong when he wants to and I won’t press him.

That can have damning consequences as I’ve learned in the not so distant past.

“Hey, you’re not gonna get all weird while we’re doing this, are you?” he asks after I get back in the driver’s seat.

“Weird how?” I inquire in confusion.

“You know…” his voice trails off as he straps his seatbelt on then turns to face me and holds up a forefinger and pinky on one hand.

I scowl at him as I turn the key in the ignition. Aftyn can never let anything go. I told him I once read about the Satanic cults in New Mexico after he told me about the email and how I wanted to stop just to take a look at their churches and stuff since we were passing through, and he’s been convinced ever since that I worship the Devil.

It amazes me considering he’s the only person in the world that deems himself worthy of such praise.

“I’ll do my best not to sacrifice you,” I snap at him as I glance into the side-view mirror, then pull out onto the street.

Universe and mythologies be damned; there’s enough malice in the man sitting next to me that I don’t have to invite anymore of it willingly into my life.

“So, are we there yet?” Aftyn asks as soon as we get stuck in gridlock traffic on the highway.

“We haven’t even made it out of New York,” I tell him with a glare.

“No wonder everything looks so familiar. Good idea, by the way. Leaving so late to dodge all of this. I guess construction hours slipped your mind, eh?”

I choose to ignore his snarky comments. I have to since it seems like Aftyn is already content on making this as miserable a trip for me as he can.

“This is the last time I do you a favor, Meyer,” I grumble as I grip the steering wheel tightly in my hands.

He chuckles but doesn’t say anything else.

This is just how we co-exist with each other, and even while sometimes we can get along without barbs and jabs, I like us best when we’re like this. It keeps the rainbows and sunshine of our friendship sparkling.

“Hey, Willa?” he asks after another ten minutes of slowly creeping traffic.

“Yeah?”

“Can I show you something?”

“Sure. It’s not like it’ll put us in danger of crashing or anything,” I reply with a shrug.

Aftyn shifts in his seat as he reaches into his pocket to retrieve his phone. I glance over at him when I see him staring it for a moment, the usual mischievous gleam in his eyes vacant, before he licks his lips and taps the screen to life.

“The emails have turned into text messages now,” he begins slowly, “and when I turned on my phone this morning…”

At this point, I’m resting my elbow against the lower pane of the window, and eyes back on traffic when I feel him reach over and poke me.

“Sorry, I—”

To say that if I wasn’t sitting in almost standstill traffic, I would have swerved from the shock would be an understatement. The man in the picture he’s showing me looks almost exactly like him, except that his eyes are a little wider than I’m assuming Lakyn’s.

“Crazy, huh?” he asks softly.

“That’s a little more than crazy,” I reply as I reach over and take the phone from him, holding it closer so I can inspect the man.

This entire time, I thought that Aftyn was pulling my leg and just wanted to see how far he could push me in doing shit for him, but now that the evidence is in my hands, I kind of feel bad for judging him so quickly.

When I attempt to hand him the phone back, a grin starts to slip over his lips. I raise an eyebrow when he begins to undo his seatbelt, then shakes his head.

“Hold it for a little bit and keep your eyes on him. I wanna try something,” he says in a thick voice as he leans over and places his chin on my shoulder.

“Aftyn, what—”

My breath hitches almost immediately when he slips a hand into the waistband of my jeans, pushes my panties aside, then roughly slides his fingers into my pussy.

I can’t exactly say this is unlike him because what he wants, he goes after, but it’s the first time he’s ever put his hands on—or in me—like this before and I’m a little too scared and equally turned on to move.

“Don’t close your eyes, cheater,” he chuckles, his breath hot on my ear as he begins to move his fingers skillfully in and out of my wet opening.

My body begins to tremble as I stare at Lakyn Meyer’s eyes while his son continues to drill me with his fingers.

“Which one of us do you like best?” he whispers into my ear as he moves his fingers faster.

When he moves his thumb to my clit and begins to rub it, while his fingers continue their assault, I do my best not to take my foot off the brake.

“Tell me,” he grunts, as he slips his fingers in deeper.

And just as I open my mouth to make a sound other than labored breathing and shuddering gasps, the car behind us lays their hand on the horn. Aftyn lets out a frustrated groan as I use my shoulder to shove him away, toss his phone at him, and press gently on the gas.

“I almost had you,” he says with an annoyed laugh.

I glance over at him and shake my head as my breathing begins to return to normal.

With a sigh, he tosses his phone into the backseat, opens the window on his side of the car, and retrieves a pack of smokes from the inside of his jacket pocket, lighting up, then turning his attention to the bright, flashing lights of the trucks blocking traffic in the middle and right lanes.

He’s done now and until he feels like speaking again, this is going to be a longer ride than I thought.

Especially if he thinks I’m going to let him get away with doing what he just did without asking me first.

I waited until the car started moving to push Aftyn and Willa’s bags off my head. It’s not easy hiding in the back of her damn car, and while I’m uncomfortable, I know I have to do my best to stay quiet while they bicker and diddle each other.
