Hot For Love (The Bradens & Montgomerys : Pleasant Hill - Oak Falls #7)(9)
Author: Melissa Foster

“But she’s busy drooling over Dash Pennington,” Brindle chimed in.

“I am not,” Amber insisted. She was a beautiful brunette and the demurest of Brindle’s sisters.

“Oh, please. You practically pushed Lindsay out of the way to see the screen,” Brindle said with a laugh. “A man finally caught your attention. You need him, Amb. Now all we have to do is get him here.”

Amber had epilepsy, and though it was well managed with medication, she lived a quiet, controlled life, and rarely dated. They had been trying to change that by encouraging her to put herself out there a little more.

“Would you stop,” Amber pleaded, and Trixie knew from her breathy voice that she was blushing. She blushed so easily. “I don’t need Dash Pennington.”

Trixie laughed. “Who is this mystery man? And why haven’t I heard his name before?”

“He’s just a football player who’s publishing a book,” Amber said.

“His PR rep got in touch with Amber about setting up a signing,” Brindle explained.

“You have to Google this guy, Trix,” Lindsay urged. “He’s hot as all get out.”

“Sure. I’ll get right on that. I’m glad you guys called. I could use a little help getting my mind off the hot guy I’m staying with for the next month. I can’t stop thinking about what happened at the bar.” Trixie had filled her friends in on Nick’s erection incident when she’d met them for dinner Thursday evening.

“The pocket rocket?” Brindle teased.

“The what?” Amber asked.

“Puff the one-eyed dragon?” Lindsay laughed.

“The Bone Ranger?” Brindle hollered.

Trixie cracked up. “You guys are not helping.”

“Oh! I get it,” Amber exclaimed.

“That’s right, Amber. Trixie wants to get the big O,” Lindsay said, causing them all to crack up.

“No I don’t!” Trixie laughed. “I mean I do, but I can’t keep thinking about that. Nick didn’t say he was into me. He said he was a man, meaning pretty women turn guys on. Period. He’s just my hot friend. Haven’t you ever had a hot friend that you thought about from time to time in a different way?”

“Yeah. I screwed his brains out and married him,” Brindle said with a laugh.

“Ugh. Don’t make me think about my brother having sex,” Trixie said. “Nick is doing me a huge favor. I can’t be lusting after him like a ridiculous teenager.”

“She’s right, you guys,” Amber said. “Even if he was turned on, they’re going to be working together. She can’t cross that line.”

“Yes she can,” Lindsay said.

“You’d never cross that line, Lindsay,” Amber said.

“I work with brides and grooms,” Lindsay pointed out. “If I crossed that line, it would ruin my Yelp rating.”

They all laughed.

“I’m almost there,” Trixie said as she turned off the highway. “Why am I having such a hard time regaining perspective on our relationship?”

“Because you had his big cock pressed against you,” Lindsay said.

“Lindsay!” Amber chided her, and they all laughed again.

“I’m going to miss you guys. A month is a long time,” Trixie said.

“We’ll text and call, and keep you in the loop on all the good stuff,” Brindle reassured her. “I think I have a solution for your cock trouble.”

“Ohmygod,” Trixie mumbled. “Can you not call it that? It only makes it harder.”

“That’s what he said,” Lindsay said.

“I’m turning onto his street. Talk fast!”

“Okay, this is your future, Trixie,” Brindle said in her most serious voice. “You’re being given a heck of a chance to get your new business in order without being overshadowed by your brothers, and you can’t afford to get sidetracked by that particular hard-bodied cowboy.”

“She’s been sidetracked by him for years,” Lindsay said.

“I know. That’s why she has to plan a night out with Jilly as soon as she gets there, with the sole purpose of finding a different guy to keep her mind occupied,” Brindle said.

“You want her to sleep around?” Amber asked. “I don’t like this plan.”

“Neither do I,” Trixie agreed.

“Not to sleep with. Just to hang out with,” Brindle said. “They say the best way to get over a guy is to get under another one, but Trixie hasn’t slept with Nick, so she’s not looking to erase that particular memory. Trix, you just need to fill your fantasy bank with new images.”

“I’m not sure I’d take relationship advice from a girl who ran away to Paris to try to forget the guy she’d loved since she was thirteen,” Lindsay said.

“That trip proved Brindle and Trace’s love conquers all,” Amber said.

“Darn right, sis,” Brindle agreed.

“I actually think Brindle’s on to something,” Trixie said. “I have been pretty much singularly focused in the fantasy department. I look at other guys and dance with them when I’m out, but Nick’s the only one I think about when I…you know.”

“Hope you brought a boatload of batteries with you,” Lindsay teased.

Trixie laughed, though she’d never bring a vibrator to Nick’s house. With her luck, one of his dogs would get ahold of it and drop it in the middle of the living room. “I’m going to try Brindle’s idea, but I’m about to turn into his driveway, so I’d better go. I love you guys.”

“We love you, too!” they said in unison.

“Have fun,” Amber said. “And remember, true love trumps everything else. Maybe you’ll meet your true love while you’re there.”

“Or at least get laid,” Lindsay added.

“Just find another guy to drool over. Trust me on that,” Brindle said.

“Okay. Thanks for all of your advice. I’ll let you know how it goes.”

After ending the call, Trixie drove down Nick’s long driveway, which was lined with gorgeous maple trees and pastures as far as the eye could see. When his stone home came into view, a familiar wave of comfort warmed her. Nick’s house was very much like him: sturdy, rugged, and supremely masculine. The interior was all rustic wood and stone, with an open floor plan. There were two master suites, one at either end of the first floor, separated by a great room, dining area, and kitchen. There were two bedrooms and a loft upstairs and a full basement that he used to talk about making into a man cave, complete with a pool table. When he’d realized he’d need to have people over to play pool, he had given up that idea. The back of the house was almost all glass, offering gorgeous views of his property and the mountains beyond. Nick hated to be confined, and because of that, those glass walls had always made sense to Trixie. She’d caught him gazing out them in the middle of many cold winter nights, as if he longed to be outside.

It was nearly seven o’clock, and she knew she’d find Nick with the animals. As she drove toward the barn, Rowdy, Nick’s rambunctious one-year-old golden retriever/Australian shepherd pup, barreled toward her truck, his tail wagging. She spotted Nick by the larger of the two cream-colored barns. His black cowboy hat was low on his brow, and he was grooming Snickers, an older miniature chestnut mare he’d rescued several years ago. Rowdy’s mom, Goldie, a golden retriever, lay in the shade a few feet away with Nick’s precious Pugsly, an eleven-year-old pug. Pugsly was blind in one eye and grunted as much as Nick did. Nick treated all of his animals like they were his children, which Trixie found endearingly funny for a guy who didn’t want a family. It was probably a good thing he didn’t want kids, given his unoriginal naming themes.
