I just shook my head. My best friend was an enigma.

“Let’s go then.” I needed something to distract me from seeing Nicholas anyway.

Amber

“Hello, Sybil.”

“Amber. What’s up, sweetheart?” Sybil asked. Her voice sounded breathy, but it could be that something was wrong with the speaker of her phone.

I was supposed to be having lunch at the cafeteria, but I had lost my appetite. I was still mortified by the events of the previous night. I hadn’t seen Nicholas yet, but the thought of facing him again made my cheeks burn with embarrassment.

“I’m still thinking about the disaster that happened last night,” I replied. “Where did you find that Carlos guy?”

Sybil chuckled. “Honey, I’m sorry. I had no idea that he was an asshole. I wouldn’t have set it up. If I had known he would be such a douche canoe to you. Listen, I’ll make it up to you, okay?”

If I were being honest, the night hadn’t been so bad because I got to see Nicholas. And he had been so nice to me.

“So, how’s Liam?”

“Oh, he’s still here,” she moaned. “That guy is a rocket.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh, he has the most magnificent cock I’ve ever seen,” she whispered. “He filled all my holes with his juicy milkshake. He gave me the best head I’d ever had. Oh, my pussy is still—”

“Um … Sybil, I have to go now,” I said.

I didn’t want anyone to overhear our conversation. Besides, she could go on and on for hours if I let her. I disconnected the call and got back to work.

Some minutes later, a familiar scent filled my nostrils, and I looked up.

“Amber,” Dad said.

I was surprised that my father had shown up at my work, even if he owned the building. Nobody knew that I was related to him. I had deliberately hidden that fact when I applied for the paralegal position at the firm. Nicholas knew my dad, but I hadn’t wanted him to employ me based on that.

During my research about Brighton & Associates, I had gotten to know about the vital role my dad had played in Nicholas’s life. My father was a real estate mogul who owned some of the iconic buildings in New York. He had helped Nicholas start his law practice when he saw the potential in him. But that was a long time ago.

“Dad, what are you doing here?”

“I came to see how you were adjusting to your new job,” he beamed at me.

He was the only family I had after my mother died of cancer some years ago.

“Thanks, Dad.” I beamed at him. “Come, I’ll show you my workspace.”

“Oh, you have acquired your own workspace?” He made it sound like I’d just announced that I owned the firm.

I could see the happiness in his eyes. Dad had a smile on his face the entire time as I showed him around.

He placed his hand on my shoulder, his lips curving into a smile. “I’m proud of you, Amber.”

“Thank you.”

“Where is Nicholas?” Dad asked. “I’d like to see him and thank him for his generosity toward you.”

I grabbed my dad’s hand and led him to Nicholas’s office. When we approached the glass doors, I knocked and went in. We walked to his desk. He looked up with astonishment. He stood and shook hands with Dad.

“It’s good to see you again, Nicholas,” my father said.

“It’s a pleasure to see you again, Mr. Cole.”

“I decided to drop by and see how my daughter was doing,” Dad replied.

Nicholas looked at me with surprise. “She’s been an asset to this firm even though she’s been here for only a few weeks. She’s intelligent and so passionate about her work. She’s been doing well since she started here, and we are all very happy to have her here with us.”

Dad seemed so pleased and happy at the mighty praise.

“I’m glad to hear that,” Dad responded. “Nicholas, would you consider joining me at my country club sometime to play golf?”

“I’d be delighted to join you when our workload eases.”

“I look forward to it,” Dad said. “May I steal this young lady for a few minutes?”

“You may take the rest of the day off, Amber,” Nicholas said.

“Thank you, and have a nice day, sir!”

Dad waited for me to tidy up my desk, but I remembered that I’d bought a box of cigars for Nicholas to thank him for his kindness. I grabbed the cigar box and hastily walked back into Nicholas’s office. The box dropped from my hands as I realized that I had walked in at the wrong time. Nicholas was naked from the waist down. He held a pair of wet slacks in his hands. He must have dropped water on them or something.

I stopped in my tracks to take in his body. It was beautifully sculpted and muscular. He had a tuft of curly hair on his chest and impressive muscles on his upper body.

I couldn’t resist glancing between his thighs. Nicholas’s cock was sexy. His cock wasn’t erect, but damn, it was hard and thick and pulsing. I hastily picked up the box and placed it on his desk.

“Like what you see, Amber?” Nicholas said with a smirk on his face.

“I’m sorry, sir,” I said, lowering my gaze. “I bought this for you … thank you.”

I briskly walked out of his office, still embarrassed and flushed to the roots of my hair. Everything had happened within seconds, but it seemed like such a long time to me. I could still remember the image of his shaft, his strong thighs, and veins running along the sides.

I’m so fucked.

“Mr. Brighton, how long do you think it will take to acquire Big Eight Insurance Firm?” Hector asked.

This was the second meeting my team and I were having with Mr. Hector Montgomery to go over the details of the acquisition of Big Eight Insurance Firm.

“It might take some other law firm a year or more,” I replied. “However, it will take us only three months. We want to move fast, but we don’t want to be hasty. I received a report from Mr. Raphael Williams, the auditor for Big Eight Firm.” I passed the audit report to Hector’s assistant, a middle-aged brunette named Margo.

Hector smiled as he carefully read the report. Big Eight Firm was doing well, but Spencer Griffins seemed to be indecisive at the moment. He was a young man in his early thirties who had just inherited his father’s business. He had no idea about running a successful insurance firm. I was a master at convincing people to change their minds. It wouldn’t take me five minutes to convince Spencer Griffins to accept Hector’s deal.

“This is good,” Hector replied.

“The only problem we seem to have now is the young Griffins,” I went on. “I’ll have lunch with him sometime this week. His indecisiveness could delay things for us, but I assure you that he’ll soon make up his mind. We have also started due diligence on the firm, and so far, the firm’s legal, financial, and commercial aspects look good.”

“I have so much faith in you, Mr. Brighton,” Hector said.

He stood and shook hands with me.
