Desk Banger(3)
Author: K.S. Rochell

“I heard that Nicholas doesn’t care about anyone but himself,” a dark-haired Charlotte said. “He will kick you out as soon as you stop being useful to him. Why does everyone treat him as if he’s a demigod?”

I couldn’t believe my ears. I had been dreaming of working with Nicholas for years. I aspired to be like him someday. I’d been fascinated by his skills and prowess in the courtroom since I read about a case he’d won while studying for an exam. He was an enigma that I would like to unravel, a man who had become so successful at what he did that others studied him. Nicholas had a string of legal victories. He also had exquisite taste in fashion; anything he wore looked good on his athletic frame. He was a hero in the legal world.

“Okay, guys, I’m going to the cafeteria now.”

I hurried from the cafeteria and returned to my desk.

Soon, it was closing time, and I had finished my work. I draped my jacket over my arm as I called out good-byes to my colleagues. I tapped my feet on the ground as I waited for the elevator door to open.

When the elevator finally arrived on my floor, I walked in, humming. The door closed, but it slowly opened again. I glanced up, blood rushing to my head as Nicholas walked in. He stood beside me, filling up the atmosphere with his masculine scent. I felt butterflies in my stomach as my skin tingled. He slipped his phone out of his pocket and tapped his finger on the screen. My throat felt hot and tight as I thought of what to say to him. I had never felt so tongue-tied and shocked before.

He looked incredibly good in a dark blue suit, which was probably worth thousands of dollars. I stared up at him, and my heart slammed against my chest. I would never forgive myself if my courage failed me now.

“Mr. Brighton,” I said in a shaky voice, “I admire your work and your skills. You are one of the most distinguished lawyers in the country. I’ve followed most of the cases you have worked on. It’s a pleasure to work with you, sir. I’m grateful that I’m able to work for you. It really is a big honor.”

An awkward silence grew between us as he looked at me. Then, he pressed one of the elevator buttons.

“You have salad dressing on your shirt,” Nicholas said in a stern tone.

I glanced at my shirt; it was indeed stained with salad dressing. My cheeks flamed up in embarrassment. Nicholas strode out of the elevator without a backward glance, leaving me deeply mortified.

Nicholas

I felt like an ass when I strode out of the elevator. Damn, I should have at least said thank you. But fuck, she was so fucking beautiful with her exotic golden-caramel skin and eyes the color of a hazelnut. I’d wanted to pin her to the elevator door and run my fingers through her silky hair while my mouth feasted on her juicy, plump lips. Fuck, she made my cock so fucking hard.

She is your employee. Snap out of it.

The bigger problem was that she was exactly my type—gorgeous and smart with banging curves. I would have asked her out without thinking twice about it. But I’d made a promise to myself, which I intended to keep. I didn’t want to be involved with an employee, because it never ended well. I’d almost lost everything the last time something like this happened.

My heart tightened in my chest as the memories of her flashed across my mind. Lisa Devine had once been the most important person in my life. But now, I could barely stand being in the same room as her. It hurt too much. My head throbbed. I still couldn’t believe I had been attracted to her, and it had almost cost me everything.

I pushed the thoughts of her out of my head as I walked into the underground parking lot. I slipped my car key out of my pocket, walking toward my Jaguar I-PACE. Lisa had been nagging me that she wanted to see me and talk. I didn’t want to have anything to do with her. She would continue to be a thorn in my flesh until I agreed to see her. Our relationship had had its fun moments, but it’d almost ruined my life and everything I had worked hard for.

A few minutes later, I pulled my car in front of a small, famous bar known as Leigh Bar. Lisa was seated in the corner of the bar, cradling a glass of Bloody Mary, which had always been her favorite drink. It irked me that I still remembered every little detail about her. She was a striking platinum-blonde beauty with high cheekbones and full lips. Her hair was styled in a short, feathered bob with a side fringe. She looked so sophisticated in a red dress, which showed off her ample cleavage and creamy neck.

She must have sensed my presence because she turned around. She swirled her tongue around her lips as her eyes flickered across my face.

“Nicholas,” she said in a breathy tone, “how are you?”

I took a deep breath as I sat beside her. My wish was to put as much distance between us as possible. However, her intoxicating yet feminine scent filled my nostrils as she leaned slightly toward me, brushing her arm against mine.

“What would you like to drink?” She chuckled. “Should I get you your usual?”

“No,” I said through clenched teeth. My jaw hardened as bile rose inside my mouth.

She laughed mirthlessly, lifting her glass to her lips. Then, she set down the glass, smiling at me. “Oh, Nick, how wonderful life is yet so unpredictable. We are successful because we hate situations we can easily predict. You see, we are always prepared for whatever life throws at us. We’ve also learned to go along with the tides of life, riding on the uncertain waves. Isn’t that why we were attracted to each other in the first place? Because we love to take risks and—”

“Lisa, is there any reason why you asked to see me urgently? Your presence here is making me nauseous. I’d rather be at my desk, doing something productive at this moment.”

She clasped her hands together taken aback by the tone of my voice. “I’m getting married.”

I pause for a second, taking in what she’d just said. “Who is the unlucky man who has been ensnared by your trap?”

She pouted her lips, “My fiancé is Hector Montgomery.”

Hector Montgomery was a giant in the banking industry. He was a business mogul and the owner of Montgomery Enterprises, a large banking investment firm.

“Congratulations,” I commented dryly.

“Nick,” Lisa said softly, “Hector recently parted ways with his previous law firm. Now, he needs a new law firm to represent him, and I’ve decided to help you because of the way things ended between us. Believe it or not, I still feel bad. Anyway, I want your firm to represent my fiancé’s firm. I’ve mentioned it to him, and he thinks it’s a great idea.”

I couldn’t believe that Lisa had just dropped a huge opportunity on my lap. I would have been elated by the news, but something caught my eyes … or rather, someone.

Amber Cole.

She was sitting at the bar with a female friend. She looked so elegant, especially when she threw her head back and laughed at something her friend had said. I felt a stirring between my thighs as I stared at her. There was something about her … it almost seemed magical. Amber looked sweet and innocent, and yet she was so intelligent.

“Nick,” Lisa whined, trying to get my attention.

Reluctantly, my eyes drifted back to Lisa, who seemed pretty upset.

She reached for her purse as she stood. “You may call me when you make up your mind. Excuse me.”
